The Lost Acre Farm – Free Range Eggs – Supplier Spotlight

Yesterday,  I spoke to the owner of The Lost Acre Farm, Michelle about how she got started, why she became an egg farmer, and just what the farm means to her. Michelle has always had chickens, and when she first moved to St Andrews on a 99 acre bush block in 2012, the plan was to become as self sufficient and sustainable as she could and live off the land without damaging it. She started with just 3 chooks in a shed. Funnily enough, she got chickens before she even purchased a fridge for her family. The love was there from the start! After a short amount of time, she ended up with 10 chooks, and had so many eggs that she didn’t know what to do with them all. So she began selling them at an organic shop in Hurstbridge. It just made her so happy to see her content chickens doing what they do in nature, eating grubs and bugs, and pecking the bushland. She realized then, that this was her passion, and she wanted to be able to spend as much time with them as possible, so she invested in 300 x day old chicks. Michelle could have bought them when they were ready to lay at 21 – 22 weeks old – but she really wanted them to have a beautiful life from the start.
